The Town Attorney manages the legal affairs for the governmental body and departmental operations of the Town of Summerdale. The primary responsibility of the Town’s attorney is to serve as legal counsel to the Mayor, Town Council, and Town departments.

  • The Town Attorney is expected to have knowledge of, and to perform, all applicable requirements stated in Town ordinances, codes and regulations. Advises Municipal boards such as the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Town Clerk, and others on legal matters regarding town operations.
  • Interprets Federal, State, and local legislation, statutes, rules and regulations to include communication and public utility laws, easements, and agreements. Reviews and analyzes court decisions and pending legislation. Reviews and make recommendations on proposed policy or procedural changes that may improve the efficiency of the town.
  • Advises Town officials on purchasing laws, land use and property acquisition, public records and meeting laws, tax and revenue codes, employment law, economic development projects, environmental and public works law, law enforcement legislation, fire/building codes and other laws pertaining to city departments and municipal business.
  • Works with outside attorneys as necessary and recommends legal services to outside counsel in complex situations where outside counsel representation is in the best interest of the Town.
  • Attends Town Meeting as needed by Town Council.

Requirements Include: Licensed by the Alabama State Bar Association to practice law in the State of Alabama is required. Seven (7) years’ experience in the practice of law in Alabama, with at least three (3) years’ recent experience directly involving the legal representation of a municipality is preferred.
